2013 Best Musical Tony winner Kinky Boots beat out Matilda The Musical and Motown The Musical for this year’s Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album. The honor is bestowed to principal vocalists Billy Porter (who also won a Tony for his performance) and Stark Sands, composer/lyricist Cyndi Lauper (a fellow Tony recipient for her score), and producers Sammy James Jr., Lauper, Stephen Oremus, and William Wittman.
The Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album has frequently been presented to the previous year’s Tony-winning Best Musical; previous recipients include Once, The Book of Mormon, In the Heights, and Spring Awakening.
With a book by Harvey Fierstein, Kinky Boots, which is currently running at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, explores the friendship between Charlie Prince, the proprietor of a failing shoe factory, and Lola, a sassy drag queen in need of a sturdy pair of heels.
