Joe O’Byrne adapts and directs the stage production of John Millington Synge’s classic work.
The Irish Repertory Theatre has extended its production of The Aran Islands, a U.S. premiere of John Millington Synge's 1906 work, adapted and directed by Joe O’Byrne, and starring Brendan Conroy. The show began performances on June 15 in advance of a June 19 opening and will now run through August 6 beyond its original July 23 closing date.
The Aran Islands is described as follows: "In 1898, upon the advice of W.B. Yeats, Synge went to live among the islanders to 'express a life that has never found expression.' In this grey, sea-battered landscape, full of mist and wild rain, hearth is home and storytellers regale with tales by the fire. Here Synge found inspiration for many later works including The Playboy of the Western World and Riders to the Sea."
The production features set design by Margaret Nolan, lighting design by Joe O’Byrne, costume design by Marie Tierney, and original music by Kieran Duddy. This production is supported by Culture Ireland.
