Sumner will make her off-Broadway and Atlantic Theater Company debut in the two-character piece. Her theater credits include the Culture Project’s workshop of The Seagull, The 24 Hour Plays, and Think Global, F**k Local. She has appeared on television in the series The Borgias, and in the film Francis Ha, which is to be released this May.
Set in a seaside town in Maine, Emmy winner Kane (best known as Simka Gravas on the hit series Taxi) legendary movie star Bette Davis, who is attempting to buy the home of an elderly couple in the town. When she discovers a woman (Sumner) who appears never to have heard of her, it’s up to “Ruth” to reclaim her past, creating a cat and mouse game along the way.
The production design team includes Neil Patel (scenic design), Ilona Somogyi (costume design), Russell H. Champa (lighting design), and Broken Chord (sound and original music).
MacKinnon received a Tony nomination for her staging of the play Clybourne Park. Her numerous directing credits include Peter and Jerry, Becky Shaw, and Death of a Salesman.
