Although the press isn’t invited to see City Center’s production of Gypsy until Saturday (with reviews posting on Monday morning), the show held its official opening on Thursday, July 12, complete with a party at the nearby Redeye Grill. Here are the musical’s trio of stars, Boyd Gaines, Laura Benanti, and Patti LuPone.
The show’s legendary book writer, Arthur Laurents, directed the production.
The great Stephen Sondheim wrote the show’s lyrics nearly 50 years ago! (The music is by the late Jule Styne.)
Nancy Opel, Alison Fraser, and Marilyn Caskey, who play strippers Mazeppa, Tessie, and Electra, are proving to be audience favorites.
Here’s Tony Yazbeck, who plays hoofer Tulsa, with Bruce Moore, who played Yonkers in the show’s 1989 Broadway production starring Tyne Daly.
The lovely Leigh Ann Larkin, who plays Dainty June, looks all grown up at the party.
Benanti gives a group embrace to four of the show’s adorable child performers: Katie Micha, Emma Rowley, Sami Gayle, and Andy Richardson.
Among the guests at the party were actor Reg Rogers, who starred with Gaines in Bach at Leipzig at New York Theater Workshop…
…Benanti’s equally talented fiancé, actor Steven Pasquale…
…and LuPone’s husband, Matthew Johnson, and their son Josh.
