The Humans, Shuffle Along, and More Honored at Drama Critics Circle Awards

The New York Drama Critics' Circle awarded Stephen Karam's The Humans and George C. Wolfe's Shuffle Along with the organization's 2016 Best Play and Best Musical honors at a ceremony at Feinstein's/54 Below on May 17.

Karam's drama premiered at Roundabout Theatre Company's Laura Pels Theatre in 2015 and is currently running at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre. Directed by Joe Mantello, the work follows Erik (Tony nominee Reed Birney), who has broken with tradition and brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter's apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls, family tensions reach a peak, and the heart and horrors of the clan are exposed. Cassie Beck, Jayne Houdyshell, Lauren Klein, Arian Moayed, and Sarah Steele complete the cast.

Shuffle Along features book and direction by Wolfe and choreography by Savion Glover. The production presents the landmark 1921 African-American musical Shuffle Along alongside the story of the behind-the-scenes saga that led the songwriting team of Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake and librettists F.E. Miller and Aubrey Lyles to create this groundbreaking work. The cast is led by Tony winners Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Billy Porter, as well as Tony nominees Brandon Victor Dixon, Joshua Henry, and Adrienne Warren.

Special citations were awarded to actress Lois Smith, Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustas, and longtime collaborators Ivo van Hove and Jan Versweyveld.
