The SpongeBob Musical has announced a one-week extension for its world-premiere production at Broadway In Chicago's Oriental Theatre. Beginning June 7, performances will now run through July 10.

Based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon character, the story is described as follows: "Stakes are higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage."

The Broadway-bound production is coconceived and directed by Tina Landau, with a book by Kyle Jarrow, orchestrations, arrangements, and music supervision by Tom Kitt, and choreography by Tony winner Christopher Gattelli. The score includes original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler, and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Tony nominee Sara Bareilles (Waitress), Jonathan Coulton, Dirty Projectors, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Tony winner Cyndi Lauper (Kinky Boots), Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and a song by David Bowie. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton.

The SpongeBob Musical cast features Ethan Slater as SpongeBob SquarePants, Gavin Lee as Squidward, Nick Blaemire as Plankton, Lilli Cooper as Sandy Cheeks, Carlos Lopez as Mr. Krabs, and Danny Skinner as Patrick. Rounding out the company are Gaelen Gilliland, Juliane Godfrey, Curtis Holbrook, Stephanie Hsu, Jesse JP Johnson, L’ogan J’ones, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Mark Ledbetter, Kelvin Moon Loh, Lauralyn McClelland, Vasthy Mompoint, JC Schuster, Allysa Shorte, Jacob Smith, Abby C.
