The new musical also stars Christian Borle and John Cariani.
Something Rotten!, the new musical by Wayne Kirkpatrick, Karey Kirkpatrick, and John O'Farrell, celebrated its Broadway opening night at the St. James Theatre on April 22.
A tribute to musical theater, Something Rotten! is set in 1590s England and follows Nick and Nigel Bottom, two brothers who are desperate to write a play but are stuck in the shadow of William Shakespeare. When they're told by a local soothsayer that the future of theater involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, they set out to write the world's first musical. Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs the production, which has received 12 Outer Critics Circle Award nominations.
Leading the company are Tony Award winner Christian Borle; Tony nominees Brian d'Arcy James, John Cariani, Brad Oscar, and Brooks Ashmanskas; and Heidi Blickenstaff, Kate Reinders, Peter Bartlett, Gerry Vichi, and Michael James Scott. The ensemble includes Eric Giancola, Linda Griffin, David Hibbard, Jenny Hill, Stacey Todd Holt, Courtney Iventosch, Aaron Kaburick, Austin Lesch, Beth Johnson Nicely, Aleks Pevec, Angie Schworer, Eric Sciotto, Brian Shepard, Chelsea Morgan Stock, Ryan VanDenBoom, Matt Wall, Marisha Wallace, and Bud Weber.
Guests at the opening-night festivities included Saturday Night Live players Tina Fey and Ana Gasteyer; Smash stars Debra Messing, Megan Hilty, and Jack Davenport; country singers Amy Grant, Chely Wright, and Little Big Town; Monty Python icon Eric Idle; and more.
