Tony Winner Cynthia Nixon Will Revisit Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing on Broadway

Tony Award winner Cynthia Nixon has been announced to join the Broadway cast of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing opposite Ewan McGregor and Maggie Gyllenhaal, who are making their Broadway debuts. Directed by Sam Gold, the production is scheduled to begin performances at the American Airlines Theatre on October 2 in advance of an official October 30 opening.

The Real Thing, which won a Tony Award for Best Play when it premiered on Broadway in 1984, follows Henry (McGregor), a playwright unhappily married to the leading actress in his play, which is about a collapsing marriage. When Henry begins an affair with their friend Annie (Gyllenhaal), life begins to imitate art. When Annie leaves her own husband to start a new life with Henry, he must decide whether their love is real. Nixon will take on the role of Charlotte.

Nixon famously appeared in the Broadway debut of The Real Thing in 1984 while simultaneously appearing in Hurlyburly, both directed by Mike Nichols. This setup was a Broadway first. The Sex and the City star won a Tony for her role in Rabbit Hole in 2006.
