Tony Winner Tonya Pinkins Goes Off-Broadway in Ed Bullins' The Fabulous Miss Marie

Woodie King Jr.'s New Federal Theatre has announced The Fabulous Miss Marie as the second title to join The Ed Bullins Project, which celebrates the influential playwright and pioneer of the Black Arts Movement. The play will begin performances at the Castillo Theatre on April 17 in advance of a May 1 opening and will run through May 18.

Woodie King Jr. directs a cast featuring Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins (Caroline, or Change) and Roscoe Orman, best known for his role as Gordon on Sesame Street. The cast also includes Toccarra Cash, Michael Chenevert, Ugo Chukwu, Aaliyah Habeeb, Beethovan Oden, G. Alverez Reid, Ashley C. Turner, and Brittany N. Williams.

Set in the 1960s during a three-day holiday at the Los Angeles home of Marie Horton, The Fabulous Miss Marie takes place against the backdrop of the civil rights movement on the eve of the Watts Rebellion. However, most of the play's characters are members of the emerging black middle class and have been shielded from the painful American legacy of slavery and racism.
