The show begins performances this evening.
David Hare's Via Dolorosa starts its run tonight at New Repertory Theatre at Arsenal Center for the Arts.
The one-man show compiles interviews and conversations with artists, politicians, historians, and settlers whom David Hare encountered during a 1997 trip to Israel and Palestine. The trip, meant to help the writer better understand the complex conflicts in the region, inspired the play, which not only reflects Hare’s own experiences but also examines the ideologies and issues of faith from those living in "The Holy Land."
Originally only performed by Hare, this production features David Bryan Jackson, who has performed the show in Washington, D.C., Florida, Maryland, Virginia, and California.
"[David Hare’s] astute dissection of the Israel/Palestine conflict is no less relevant now than it was during his travels in the region during the mid-1990s," says artistic director Jim Petosa. "This work, along with its Festival companion, The Testament of Mary, delves deeply into very personal stories that are separated in time yet are connected in place. It is our hope that New Rep audiences will be compelled and engaged by these works as they relate to one another and this season’s theme of Identity."
The creative team includes Ryan Bates (set design), Tyler Kinney (costume design), Matt Guminski (lighting design), and Anna Burnham (stage manager).
Performances will run through January 31.
