Scott McPherson’s acclaimed play is making its Broadway debut.
Roundabout Theatre Company has released footage from the Broadway debut of Scott McPherson's Marvin's Room, now playing at the American Airlines Theatre. Directed by Obie winner Anne Kauffman, the production stars Lili Taylor (Six Feet Under) as Bessie, Janeane Garofalo (Wet Hot American Summer) as Lee, and Tony nominee Celia Weston (The Last Night of Ballyhoo) as Ruth.
Marvin's Room follows estranged sisters Lee and Bessie. Lee is a single mother who's been busy raising her troubled teenage son, Hank. Bessie's got her hands full with their elderly father and his soap opera-obsessed sister. When Bessie is diagnosed with leukemia, the two women reunite for the first time in 18 years.
The company features Carman Lacivita as Bob/Marvin, Jack DiFalco as Hank, Nedra McClyde as Dr. Charlotte/Retirement Director, Luca Padovan as Charlie, and Triney Sandoval as Dr. Wally. The creative team includes Laura Jellinek (sets), Jessica Pabst (costumes), Japhy Weideman (lights), and Daniel Kluger (original music and sound).
Marvin's Room premiered at the Goodman Theatre in February 1990 and went on to Hartford Stage, Playwrights Horizons, and the Minetta Lane Theatre in New York. For Marvin's Room, McPherson received the 1990 Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Play, and the 1991 Whiting Award, among others.
