The musical might head uptown rather than extend again at the Public Theater.
Will Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical about the life of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, make the move to Broadway this spring before the April 23 awards deadline?
The New York Post reports that the show might cut short its extended run at the Public Theater's Newman Theater in an effort to head uptown before the end of April. The musical began performances January 20 and officially opens February 17. The closing date is currently scheduled for April 5. Possible Broadway houses it could play include the Richard Rodgers Theatre, where current tenant If/Then will close on March 22 (and where Miranda's Tony-winning musical In the Heights played). Jeffrey Seller is the lead producer.
Directed by Thomas Kail and inspired by Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton explores the life of the American founding father and first Secretary of the Treasury, as well as his experiences as an orphan of the British West Indies who immigrated to the 13 Colonies and helped shape the United States of America.
Miranda takes on the title role, with a principal cast that includes Christopher Jackson (George Washington), Brian d'Arcy James (King George), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler), Phillipa Soo (Eliza Hamilton), Leslie Odom Jr. (Aaron Burr), Daveed Diggs (Marquis De Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson), Anthony Ramos (John Laurens, Phillip Hamilton), Okieriete Onaodowan (Hercules Mulligan, James Madison), and Jasmine Cephas Jones (Peggy Shuyler, Maria Reynolds). The ensemble is made up of Carleigh Bettiol, Ariana DeBose, Sydney James Harcourt, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Stephanie Klemons, Jon Rua, Seth Stewart, Betsy Struxness, Ephraim Sykes, and Voltaire Wade-Greene. Swings are Andrew Chappelle and Alysha Deslorieux. Javier Muñoz serves as standby for Hamilton.
Hamilton features scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Howell Binkley, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, music direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, and choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler.
