Cara Mia Theatre Co.'s production of Yemaya's Belly begins performances tonight at Dallas' Latino Cultural Center.
The play from Pulitzer Prize winner Quiara Alegría Hudes (Water by the Spoonful) follows a boy born into a humble farming family on a Latin American island. After his first taste of a cold Coca-Cola he dreams of a world beyond his family's meager acre. Yemaya’s Belly follows the boy's epic journey into manhood and materialism, from farm to city, to a raft sailing to the north to meet the "President of America."
Featured in the cast are Frida Espinosa Müller, Ivan Jasso, Omar Padilla, Jerrold Trice, and Tiana Kaye Johnson. Marisela Barrera directs.
The creative team includes Mark Pearson (lighting design), S-Ankh Rasa (original composition, musician), Ryan Matthieu Smith (costume design), and Kenneth Verdugo (set design).
Performances continue through March 19.
