That Takes Ovaries

Jimmy Tingle’s OFF BROADWAY presents That Takes Ovaries: Bold Females and their Brazen Acts, a play by Rivka Solomon and Bobbi Ausubel. This is a Diversity Lab Theater production. Everyone is welcome, including mothers and daughters eager to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend together with a special event.

Adapted from the book That Takes Ovaries! by Rivka Solomon, the play of the same name is an exciting collection of real-life stories from women and girls about the gutsy, outrageous, courageous things they have done — the stories are short, sassy, multicultural, and fun. These touching true tales of estrogen-powered deeds range from playful to political, from funny to serious. Also fitting for the Mother’s Day timing of this show, the play is indeed a mother/daughter collaboration. Rivka Solomon adapted the book to the stage with her mother, Bobbi Ausubel. Rivka’s father, Stan Edelson, co-directs this production with Rivka.

That Takes Ovaries is coupled with a grassroots open mike movement for women’s empowerment. After each performance, women and girls from the audience are asked to share stories about times they acted boldly. Guys join in, proudly bragging about the ovaries in their lives — mothers, sisters, daughters. Everyone who speaks gets a chocolate egg wrapped in gold foil — a Golden Ovary award.
