This must see dramatic portrayal of historical figure Mammy Pleasant was considered the Mother of Civil Rights in the 1800s in the State of California at the same time in she was helping find slaves jobs a San Francisco local paper declared her A Voodoo Queen. Mary Ellen felt that we are mirrors of each others souls. She watched what people did with one another and found a way to capitalize on it through financial investments. However many white people felt it was through her ability to perform Voodoo. And, that Mary Ellen was a dangerous woman who caused the death of many and put spells on others.

If Mary Ellen was really responsible for all the terrible deeds of which people accused her, why would she perform them if she believed the evil she did would come back to haunt her? Why would she have killed her business partner, Thomas Bell when she was supposed to have been in love with him? And, then there is the controversy about her relationship with John Brown who tried to fight for the rights of slaves and ended up dead. What was Mary Ellen’s role in that and why in 1998 did they put John Browns name on her gravestone?
