About the Show

There are two sides to every love story . . .

The Chance Theater’s 2006 Season opens with Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown’s captivating song-cycle of modern romance! This fresh and contemporary musical ingeniously chronicles a young couple’s romance from meeting to break-up . . . or from break-up to meeting, depending on who you’re watching. Some of the most heartbreaking and universally felt moments of modern romance will leave you crying and laughing! Oanh Nguyen directs.

Inspired by composer-lyricist-librettist Jason Robert Brown’s own life experience, this character driven, intimate, two-person musical tells the compelling story of Jamie, a nice Jewish boy, and Cathy, a good Irish Catholic girl, who fall in love, get married, and fall apart over the course of five years. Jamie, an emerging novelist experiencing his first taste of success, tells us his story in chronological order, while Cathy, a struggling actress, starts at the end and works her way back to her first date with Jamie. Through this temporal shift we see how even a powerful love for one another cannot always overcome the obstacle of communication.
