Originally performed at Chicago’s Northlight theatre, Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years is a musical that chronicles a five year relationship from beginning to end. Kathy, an aspiring actress, begins the show at the end of the relationship, whereas Jamie, an up-and-coming writer, begins the show at the beginning of the relationship. The two meet up in the same time when they get married in the middle of the show, and they then continue in opposing timelines. Kathy ends the show right after the couple first meet, and Jamie ends the show after the couple gets divorced.
The Last Five Years uses time and memory in a different way to look at a relationship with the different viewpoints that are present. Seeing love travel in different directions brings a newfound beauty, as well as a new intuition to a couple’s story
Now showing at Studio/Stage theater in Hollywood, Firefly Theatre Group is producing Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years.
