About the Show

Based on the true story that rocked Great Britain, and as timely today as when it occurred, Hugh Whitemore’s Pack of Lies offers an unforgettable account of friendship and betrayal and details the capture and arrest of two spies.

Set in the autumn and winter of 1960-1961, the play focuses on Bob and Barbara Jackson, an ordinary middle-class English family who live in the non-descript London suburb of Ruislip. Across the street live the Krogers–transplanted Canadians who moved into the neighborhood five years ago. If the Jacksons are somewhat stiff and a bit dull, then the Krogers provide the perfect tonic–they are lively, warm and genuinely good-hearted. All are best friends.

This amiable world is forever disrupted by a visit from a “civil servant” who solicits the Jacksons’ aid in the surveillance of the comings and goings of an unnamed “person of interest.” When the Jacksons agree to let their home be used as the government’s observation post, the “pack of lies” begins to grow. Days turn into weeks as the Jacksons learn that much more is under scrutiny, and that not only traitors lie.
