Transparent Theater, Berkeley’s experimental theater, launches its 2003-2004 season with The No Ghost Hamlet.
These are turbulent times in Elsinore, U.S.A. Hamlet is a she – and having a relationship with her next door neighbor Ophelia. Home from Wittenberg College to mourn her father’s death, Hamlet has had the horrifying experience of witnessing her mother marry her abusive uncle Claudius. When the players (a local rock band called “The Tragedians of the City”) arrive and play, the confrontations get underway. This is a Hamlet like you have never seen before. Without changing or even rearranging a word of Shakespeare’s play, only through careful editing, Transparent Theater funnels all the rage and emotion and poetry and truth into a claustrophobic, domestic setting.
