A bitter battle erupts when it is revealed that the site of a new museum enshrining American liberty is the ground on which George Washington’s slaves’ quarters once stood. The conflict between two African-American characters – one a political activist, the other a conservative author – is juxtaposed against the story of Ona Judge, one of Washington’s slaves, as she struggles with the decision of whether to escape her bondage. Through the interplay of past and present, A House with No Walls explores the question of how we decide which elements of our history will be commemorated and which will be erased.
Making its World Premiere, A House with No Walls is a production of the Continued Life Fund, a program of the National New Play Network (NNPN). Together the Continued Life Fund and the NNPN support partnerships of three or more theatres in multiple productions of the same new play, guarantying an opportunity for the play to grow and flourish through contact with a wide national audience.
