When a spontaneous protest erupts at the local grocery store, Antonia absconds with a load of groceries hidden beneath her dress. Once she enlists her friend Margherita to conceal the evidence from their husbands and the authorities, deception and fabrication spiral into a hilarious comedy of errors. Like most of Dario Fo’s work, We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay! has its roots in the commedia dell’arte, a brand of improvisational street theater that flourished in Italy in the 16th and 17th centuries.
