Set in 1974 in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, the story unfolds in the old kitchen where the Magrath sisters, Lenny, Meg and Babe, grew up. The eldest, Lenny, is the family caregiver and unhappily turning 30 with no marital prospects; the middle sister, Meg is self-absorbed and rudderless at 27, with her musical aspirations unrealized; and the youngest, Babe is facing dire consequences at 24, having just been released on bail for shooting her husband in the stomach the night before.
The sisters’ sibling rivalries simmer under the surface as they confront the chaos of the legal battle confronting Babe; the fate of the family patriarch, Old Granddaddy, who is lingering in the hospital; their know-it-all former-debutante cousin, Chick and her overbearing advice-doling manner; and the arrival of Meg’s former flame, Doc Porter.
