Incorporating the energy of the classic jazz genre, world rhythms and striking visuals, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago presents its fall engagement. The evening’s program, entitled Interplay, explores relationships through dance and features six exciting and original works, including the world premiere of “BeIngOne” and the company premiere of “SuperZeroes.”
“BeIngOne,” choreographed by Davis Robertson, a former lead dancer of The Joffrey Ballet, reflects the dynamics of relationships, whether it is as an individual, with a partner or in a community. “SuperZeroes” is a comic piece choreographed by Jon Lehrer and focuses on two mediocre superheroes competing against each other before the real superhero enters the scene.
Also in the program is “Giordano Moves,” a tribute to the classic jazz dance style of company founder Gus Giordano, choreographed by associate director Jon Lehrer and artistic director Nan Giordano. Set to an original score by Chicago jazz legend George McRae, the piece made its debut in March of this year and was chosen by The New York Times as “the best example of classic jazz dance at this summer’s Jazz Dance World Festival.”
The program also includes audience favorites; “Bridge and Tunnel,” “Surrender,” and “Prey.” Choreographed by Jon Lehrer, “Bridge and Tunnel” takes a playful look at growing up in Queens, NY. “Surrender” is choreographed by Alberto Arias and features three couples reflecting the light-hearted and serious sides of surrendering yourself to a relationship. Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago has tried to retire “Prey,” but the audience refuses to let them. Choreographed by Ron De Jesus, “Prey” always receives raves from the crowd and is described by the Chicago Tribune as an “untamed work of art.”
