The Cassilis Engagement

About the Show

“Engagements are such troublesome things. They sometimes even lead to marriage.” That statement sums up the dillemma of Adelaide Cassilis when she learns that her son Geoffrey is engaged to an “unsuitable” young lady he has met in London. She immediately embarks on a campaign to change her son’s mind without him realizing it. She invites the girl and her “even-more-unsuitable” mother for an extended visit to the Cassilis country estate, setting off a comic clash between old money and nouveau ambition. A splendidly witty comedy by St. John Hankin, the man Shaw considered the shining light of the New Drama.
