New York City
Cousin Matthew comes to Broadway! Devotees of “Downton Abbey” (and costume dramas in general) will want to catch this tale of nineteenth century New York society. Expect lots of tea, but very little sympathy.
The Heiress is the story of Catherine Sloper (Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain), the shy and sheltered daughter of a prominent New Yorker (David Strathairn). Caught between the demands of an emotionally distant father and the attentions of a passionate young suitor (“Downton Abbey’s” Dan Stevens), Catherine must navigate the terrain of love and regret, desire and duty, a chance for happiness and the burden of fortune…as only an heiress can.
The cast features Tony winner Judith Ivey (Hurlyburly) as Lavinia Penniman. Moises Kaufman (33 Variations) directs.
Mairin Lee will assume the role of Catherine Sloper from Golden Globe, Critic’s Choice, and SAG Award nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) when she attends those awards ceremonies on January 10, January 13, and January 27.
