In Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer, Miss Hardcastle, a well-bred gentlewoman, assumes the role of a bar maid in order to win the attentions of Mr. Marlow, a gentleman whose fumbling ways with upper-class ladies and familiarities with working class girls belie his chances at a suitable marriage.
