Ariane Anthony & Company’s sixth New York season is a program of solos, duets, and short films featuring the premiere of a new version of the solo “Snail.” With original music by John Stone, “Snail” is a collaboration between choreographer Ariane Anthony and visual artist Agata Oleksiak whose ‘wearable sculpture’ of rope, crochet twine and wire inspires the dance.
Other delightful offerings: “Airmail Dance” (1997), conceived by renowned choreographer and children’s-book author Remy Charlip, choreographed by Ariane Anthony and Bryan Hayes, with an original score by Carolyn Lord, and Monica Olsson and Vincent McCloskey dancing the roles created by Hayes and Anthony; “Stone’s Prologue” (2001), a tour-de-force solo dance-enactment of a tribal trickster tale by Anishinaabe author Gerald Vizenor; “In April When Flowers Are Falling From the Trees” (2006), a duet performed by Olsson and Anthony; “Goad” (Uncut), a silent film by Ariane Anthony and visual artist Noe Kidder inspired by Samuel Beckett’s play “Act Without Words II”, starring Cedric Neugebauer and Jeff Seal.
The evening is dedicated to the life and work of the remarkable experimental filmmaker/animator Helen Hill (1970 – 2007). Interspersed with the dances will be several short films by Hill, including “Madame Winger Makes a Film: A Survival Guide for the 21st Century” and the higly acclaimed “Mouseholes”, a poignant memorial to her grandfather.
