Outside, Gun Club is a dark comedy; inside, it is a tangled, edgy, and ultimately, tragic play. The setting is Yakima, Washington, a small orchard town east of the Cascades. A troubled 18 year old boy named Klaus, torn between his divorced parents, becomes the object of an awkward attempt at male bonding by his father, who takes him shooting at a firing range. There he meets a college-bound girl and falls in love with her, but he is too fragile to be redeemed by her. The play skillfully draws the failure of the boy’s attempts to establish closeness with his mother and father. Both of them have found needy new soulmates and seem primarily obsessed with achieving peace at home, but not with Klaus.
