Inspired by Spoon River Anthology, Jose Rivera wrote Sonnets for an Old Century in 1998. The play offers a surprising look at what it means to be alive–as seen from the afterlife; an afterlife filled with lyricism, power and whimsy, as few but Rivera could describe it. The multicultural cast of characters confronts the play’s central event–their last chance to address lifelong passions–and as they do, they illuminate the full scope of American experience today. Emory Van Cleve directs.
