About the Show

The Madman and the Nun is an absurdist black comedy written by S.I. Witkiewicz (aka Witkacy), a famous Polish avant-garde writer and artist. The plot concerns a mad poet kept against his will at the State Mental Institution where he is being cured by two psychiatrist who treat him as their guinea pig. When one of the doctors introduces a heartbroken Catholic nun (as a part of a therapeutic experiment), the patient attempts to seduce her, hoping that she will help him to free himself.

S. I. Witkiewicz is widely considered to be a precursor of The Theatre of the Absurd, preceding Samuel Beckett and Eugene Ionesco.
