The 1974 dark comedy by German playwright, Franz Xaver Kroetz, portrays Martha and Kurt, a young blue collar couple wading its way through society’s bleaker pools. The characters alternately feed into or rise above the waters of consumerism and conformism. They assess their place and status in society through tokens of consumption until tragedy strikes their family unit and releases them somewhat. Martha and Kurt are pieces in a larger machinery. They begin with what they’ve been dealt but learn to identify change as this wonderful and insightful piece moves along. Directed by Marcia Haufrecht with Roxana Alonso and Christopher Kerson.
