About the Show

A cast of eight men, women, and a surprise guest takes on the sixteen- plus roles listed by the Dramatis Personae, crossing gender and age lines in this adaptation that brings the farcical style of the play to the fore. Taking its cue from the induction, this adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew emphasizes the play within a play structure. To "frame his mind with mirth and merriment" (so they say), the players proceed to present "a kind of history" to Christopher Sly- victim of his vice and ambition, recipient of a practical joke. Thus, the action of ‘Shrew’ begins. Renowned for its themes of female subjugation, the action of the play reveals its relevance to the nature of all mankind "in this waning age." Inspired by a process the company has fondly termed "inflict learning", the production explores the actions of individuals under pressure to achieve what they want and obtain power over their circumstances, literally.

Under the insightful direction of Chris Shepard, the action of ‘Shrew’ utilizes every accessible aspect of the Underground space to orchestrate this physical comedy, beginning allegro moderato and accelerating to a fourth act presented in a four scene harmony. From mounting a production in planning, to being mounted by a production in execution- this production of Shrew makes one wonder who is really in charge after all?
