Imagine an irreverant cheerleading squad of feminist women ages 23 to 53 shouting, stomping, clapping, and cheering for themselves. Now go see Wanted: X-Cheerleaders and see the real thing! This collaborative performance project by artist/founder/director Kim Irwin and choreographer/co-director Jody Oberfelder features an all-woman squad and marching band. The production takes a hard look at this perennially perky American gender icon by creating new cheers, chants, and movements to redefine the activity of cheerleading and to explore personal issues such as sexuality, aging, motherhood, body image, self-esteem, harassment, and inequality. The show has played to sold-out audiences in NYC, Atlanta, Washington DC, Tampa, and Chicago. Now it comes to the New York International Fringe Festival.
