Lombardi, written by Academy Award winner Eric Simonson, brings to life legendary football coach Vince Lombardi during a week in the 1965 NFL season when he coached the Green Bay Packers. The play, based on David Maraniss's book When Pride Still Mattered, premiered in 2010 at Circle on the Square in New York, starring Dan Lauria (The Wonder Years) in the title role. Vince Lombardi led the Packers to three straight & five total NFL championships as well as victories in the first two Super Bowls in 1966 & 1967. Lombardi, born in Brooklyn in 1913, son of Italian immigrants, rose to become a national symbol of determination to succeed & was widely admired for his views on hard work & winning. In 1971, the Super Bowl Trophy was named in his memory, & he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
