The Magic Fire is the story of the Berg family, a group of Viennese-Italian opera lovers who live in Argentina during the reign of General Juan Peron. The story is told through the memory of Lise Berg as she looks back on her childhood in Argentina. Her family fled from Europe. First, her grandparents flee Italy in the late 1980s in search of more opportunity. Later, the rest of her family fled Nazi occupied Austria and economically-impoverished Italy. While Lise is growing up in Argentina, the political climate begins to turn, and turn on the family, as Peron rises to power and the family is left with hefty decisions to make.
