For the final show of its 11th season, Theatre Babylon presents the epic rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar, written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber and co-directed by Brad Cook and John Longenbaugh.
The musical tells the story of Christ’s last seven days on Earth from the point of view of Judas Iscariot, the man who ultimately betrays him. Judas dares to argue that Jesus is just a man whose followers have twisted his words into prophecy. While it was intended to be a stage musical, it remained only an album until 1971 as many producers were too afraid to take a chance on such a daring production. October 12, 1971, it opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger under the direction of Tom O’Horgan who had directed the 1960’s landmark musical Hair. While many people considered this musical to be blasphemous, there were those who saw it as a reverent spiritual explosion.
